During the summer of 1973, I ran into a guy named Leroy out at the Rafters Dance Hall Tavern in Nekoosa. When I first met him, he told me that he thought I had magic powers and was very "mystical." He wanted to move into my apartment. I said no. He persisted. I thought he was pushy. He moved in.

He started talking about mind-expansion with LSD. He said I had to read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. He also brought a book with him "You have to read..." called The Cipher of Genesis about Hebrew Qabala the Holy Word of God.

I did a paper on drugs in highschool where I found that probably the only really safe drug was 'maybe' marijuana. Leroy wanted to start a farm with only guys to expand our minds. I told him that if he is going to do this he should be fair to women too, but that was like saying that women should do drugs too and I didn't believe that. Again I said no.

Then he started talking about going to Florida and he wanted to expand my mind. Initially I said no, but we went to Fort Lauderdale just before Christmas.

When Christmas came I wanted to go home to find out about Michelle and 'Oz.' They were O.K.

John Long and John Pramsma came up in their van and were arranging to go see Leroy who was now in Key West. I thought it would be cooler to go there and I didn't have a job so I went.

When we got there, we stayed at a guy in the Navy named Jim's for only three days before Leroy found a beautiful huge house with a Spanish balcony around the second floor for only $130 a month. We took it and moved in.

I was real leary about taking a lot of drugs, but Leroy kept up his mind-expansion rap and one night he set me up to take my first LSD. He gave me a pill, I took it, and we headed for the Midget bar. Leroy didn't do any drugs that night. He was my guide just in case I had a bad time of it.

There was a raised bar and a dance floor down a few stairs below the bar on the same floor. It was a very excellent night spot with an excellent band called 'Sackweed.' I had heard them go through their repertoire twice before because I was a musician myself and really enjoyed hearing a good band. They played the same songs in the same order with the same jokes both nights. They played country rock.

That night, as my toe hit the dance floor, my consciousness appeared to reach out from the back of my head and take over everyone's consciousness in the dance hall. I remember this with great clarity. The band immediately was broken off from one of the numbers in their repertoire to a peculiar undefined abstract jazz. It appeared to me that my brain was playing their instruments for them and I had taken over their consciousness with mine. I could feel the strain in the back of my neck, as if I were playing the band and the people in the bar. Even the dancers were being jerked around like puppets.

Leroy quickly stepped a little ways ahead of me and, pointing to the band, exclaimed, "Rich, do you see that!?!!?!!!" I said tentatively, "Yeah, I see it, Leroy." I was skeptical of what I was really seeing because I was tripping, but I didn't see how Leroy could really be doing what he appeared to be doing if it wasn't real. Everything seemed real.

The drummer was flopping around on the drums; the bass player was plunking abstractly; and the band wasn't playing country-rock anymore. In fact they weren't playing anything that could be recognized as music anymore. I said to Leroy, "Let's move closer to the band to see what's going on." We moved closer to the band. As we did, I felt the back of my neck grow tired and gradually the band slowed down and stopped. I got the feeling that my mind had been playing them in some kind of strange telepathy. It was as if I had possessed the band and the people in the bar and then let them go. Was this possible??

When we were up near the stage, the musicians formed a huddle around the drummer and were gesturing strangely and pointing to their instruments in a very excited fashion. It looked as if they were discussing what appeared to have just happened.

Then, suddenly, the leader of the band, Sack, strode out to the microphone and ecstatically began strumming his acoustic guitar and singing, "Jesus Christ is here!!! Jesus Christ is here!! Jesus Christ is here!"

Leroy turned to me and said, "Rich, is that for you!?" "Jesus, I hope not, Leroy!", I said.

The rest of the night I huddled in a dark corner and sipped beer. I couldn't believe what had just happened. Was it a hallucination or was it real? I couldn't seem to tell the difference. Leroy seemed real. I decided that I had a responsibility to check it out when I was drugless. I went home that night alone. Leroy, my guide, had disappeared.

The next morning, when I was no longer tripping, the first one I talked to about it was Leroy. I went upstairs and gently awakened him in his bed. He pulled himself up, looked very disturbed, threw his feet to the floor and put his head in his hands after he saw who it was.

I asked him if what happened the night before really happened. He said, "Yeah, Richard, it did."

I still didn't believe him and went back to talk to Jeff Chandler, the drummer for 'Sackweed.' I asked him if anything peculiar happened the night before. He said defensively, "No, why??", but he was curiously expecting me to say something. I chickened out and said, "Oh, nothing."

I went back to the house. Leroy had disappeared. We eventually found him in jail playing with his penis and repeating over and over again, "One, two, three, infiniteeeeeeee!!!"

I still don't know what happened that night, but I'm very leary of LSD. What if what seemed to happen actually happened?? Leroy didn't do anything and he said it happened. Who "knows."

"Leroy Never Came-Down: Strange: Because Drugs Are Burning Chemicals And Chemicals Burn-OUT."

"WE HAD TO TAKE-HIM-ALL-THE-WAY-HOME: AND HAVE HIS PARENTS TAKE-HIM-TO-SAINT-JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL IN MARSHFIELD, WISCONSIN."

"HE WAS RELEASED TWO MONTHS LATER."
