Logically heavy water, with it's single electron, single proton, and two neutrons is imbalanced electronically when bonded to an oxygen atomic shell. When that bond is broken, electronically, the oxygen atom no longer balances the heavy hydrogen. The neutron is released because of the imbalance and energy is released along with it.
